Hereford lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles (26 km) east of the border with Wales, 21 miles (34 km) southwest of Worcester, and 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Gloucester. With a population of 50,400 people, Hereford is the largest settlement in the county of Herefordshire.

The Cider Museum
Visit Hereford''s famous Cider Museum and learn about the history of cider making - how the apples were milled and pressed and how the resulting juice was fermented to produce cider. Set in a former cider making factory, visitors can explore original cider champagne cellars and view cidermaking equipment, a cooper''''s workshop and a vat house. Listen to oral history recordings and view 19th century watercolours of cider apples and perry pears and appreciate the delicately engraved collection of English lead crystal cider glasses dating from the 18th century onwards.

The Waterworks Museum
The working museum which makes the story of drinking water spring to life. The range of engines, pumps and equipment on display is unique, spanning the period from the Industrial Revolution to the close of the twentieth century. Almost all the machines on display are the last examples of their kind working anywhere in the world.

Mappa Mundi
The Hereford Mappa Mundi is unique in Britain's heritage; an outstanding treasure of the medieval world, it records how thirteenth-century scholars interpreted the world in spiritual as well as geographical terms. The map bears the name of its author 'Richard of Haldingham or Lafford' (Holdingham and Sleaford in Lincolnshire). Recent research suggests a date of about 1300 for the creation of the map.

Chained Library
The Chained Library at Hereford Cathedral is a unique and fascinating treasure in Britain''''s rich heritage of library history. There were books at Hereford Cathedral long before there was a ''''library'''' in the modern sense. The cathedral''''s earliest and most important book is the eighth-century Hereford Gospels; it is one of 229 medieval manuscripts which now occupy two bays of the Chained Library.
