The name AldeBurgh means "old fort" although this, along with much of the Tudor town, has now been lost to the sea.
In the 16th century, Aldeburgh was a leading port, and had a flourishing ship-building industry. Sir Francis Drake's ships Greyhound and Pelican (later renamed Golden Hind) were both built in Aldeburgh.
The main shopping area in Aldeburgh runs parallel to the shingle beach. It is on this beach that you will find The Scallop, a stainless steel shell which stands about 4 metres high and is dedicated to Benjamin Britten.

Dunan House
The house was built by Newson Garrett, father of feminist pioneers Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Millicent Fawcett in 1893. It has a big garden and is situated in a private road in the quiet and wooded part of Aldeburgh opposite the town tennis courts and the Bowling Green. The footpath beyond the front gate leads to the marshes and the river 10 minutes away. In the other direction Aldeburgh high street and the beach are less than 10 minutes walk. There is ample parking space. Aldeburgh town is full of good shops and great places to eat and drink.
Brudenell Hotel
The Brudenell Hotel is really rather special. Situated at the southern end of Aldeburgh, Suffolk, close to the Sailing Club, it is a haven of peace and relaxation, allowing you to escape the pressures of daily life.
The Brudenell’s 42 bedrooms are all furnished to a very high standard and are decorated in a light, airy and relaxing style. Most have glorious views of the sea or the River Alde and its surrounding marshland - some of the finest in Suffolk.

The rooms vary in size and outlook and the tariff varies accordingly. Seven of the rooms are in Darfield House opposite the main hotel. These rooms are particularly spcacious and well appointed. For those guests who find stairs difficult there are five ground floor rooms. The hotel does not have a lift.
