Extension Of Dispersal Powers In Pinhoe Exeter
Posted: 24/01/2007 15:32:41
Police in Exeter have been given authority to extend dispersal powers under Anti Social Behaviour legislation to deal with group disorder in the Pinhoe area of the City. The three-month extension begins on Saturday 27th January and finishes on 26th April.
Residents have reported continuing problems of nuisance and rowdy behaviour such as throwing missiles, banging on windows, using foul language and aggravating members of the public going about their business.
Dispersal Powers have already proved to be an extremely useful tool in this location, as it has elsewhere in Exeter. Police welcome the opportunity to continue to use it whilst working with the Youth Services and Youth Offending Team to try to enable access to facilities and activities for young people, and to address offending behaviour where this occurs.
These Powers enable uniformed police officers to disperse groups of 2 or more who are causing or are likely to cause the public intimidation, harassment, alarm or distress. Failure to comply with a direction to disperse is a criminal offence attracting up to a 3 month custodial sentence.
Across the City, Dispersal Zones exist in Exwick, Cowick/Buddle Lane, Wonford & St Loyes ad the City Centre.
This comes in the same week that Exeter was announced as one of the Government’s Respect Action Area, and it shows a continuing commitment by the City Council and the Police to respond to the public’s concerns and take action to tackle anti social behaviour.
