Discovery Centre exhibition is on the right tracks
Posted: 26/01/2007 23:53:32
The exhibition now arriving at Craven Arms is sure to prove a transport of delight for anyone interested in railways…
Scheduled to arrive at The Secret Hills Gallery in the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre at 10am on Saturday 13 January, it will depart at 4.30pm on Sunday 18 February.
"Trains of Thought" takes the railway as its inspiration, and will feature a contemporary art exhibition of work by Secret Hills Arts Café artists who have made the Centre their 'spiritual home'.
Craven Arms, of course, has a long association with the railway, which helped to transform a small hamlet into a bustling market town. First came the Shrewsbury to Hereford line in the late 1840s, followed by the Knighton line which linked South Shropshire to Central Wales. The town's position as a busy junction was then reinforced with the introduction of the Buildwas line that travelled along the northern foot of Wenlock Edge to the Shropshire coalfield.
Evidence of the railways is still visible throughout Craven Arms – not least in the Onny meadows, which lies adjacent to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. One of its most unusual features is an abandoned railway carriage which has been recently refurbished, and will become another feature of the "Trains of Thought" exhibition. Visitors who leave the Gallery for a short walk to the carriage will be rewarded by the sight of a fascinating installation by local artist Steve Attwood Wright.
The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, South Shropshire, was named as a runner-up in the “Small Visitor Attraction” category of the Heart of England’s annual tourism awards, and also recently collected an award from the Association for Heritage Interpretation.
The Discovery Centre is operated by Shropshire County. Much of it - including the café, gallery, shop and meadows - is accessed entirely free-of-charge. For more details, telephone 01588-676000, or visit www.shropshirehillsdiscoverycentre.co.uk.
