Supporting School Values at St Ives School

Posted: 01/02/2007 12:30:41

Students from St Ives School will be 'passing out' this Friday at St Ives Fire Station. The official passing out parade is to commemorate the work the students have completed on a week long course 'The Phoenix Project'.

The Phoenix Project was launched in September 2002 by Cornwall County Fire Brigade. In 2006 the project became part of the Directorate of Children, Young People and Families.

Under the new leadership of Children, Young People and Families the outcomes of the Phoenix Project five day course now includes raising self esteem and confidence, raising aspirations, promoting school participation, improving social inclusion and reducing anti-social behaviour and alcohol misuse.

"At the beginning of the week the students take part in basic fire service drills and hose running, encouraging team work and inclusion. In pairs they complete specific tasks and they are encouraged to discuss and debate during an evaluation at the end of each day," said Tim Cocks, Project Leader.

On the third day the students learn how to give the 'kiss of life' and are encouraged to discuss fire safety in the home. At the end of the week parents, guardians and representatives from partner agencies are invited to watch the final fire exercise scenario and 'passing out' parade.

The team do not just provide a week long course we have also identified a need for further mentoring, one day courses, young parent courses and participation in Community Emergency Service Courses" added Tim Cocks.

"This year we are working closely with five schools:- St Ives, Falmouth, Helston, Tretherras (Newquay) and Liskeard so that we can continue our support for the young people that attend the initial five days."
