New Services for Families in Newlyn
Posted: 05/02/2007 22:57:31
A host of new services are being offered for families in Newlyn thanks to a partnership between the town's community centre and Cornwall County Council's Family Services.
The Centre, on Chywoone Hill, is a multi purpose church and community centre in Newlyn and will be used to deliver a range of new activities and facilities for families.
The new services are part of Sure Start Children's Centres which are being developed by Family Services across the county. The aim is that all young children and their families in Cornwall will be able to access Children's Centre facilities by 2010.
There are currently 20 children's centres across the county with services in Penwith delivered through large centres in Penzance, Hayle and St Ives, smaller centres in Pendeen, St Just, Marazion, St Hilary and St Erth and through a range of community buildings including the Newlyn Centre.
Children's Centres provide a range of services and activities for families with a baby on the way or a child including family support, health advice and information, courses for parents and carers and childcare and early years education. Funding for the centres comes principally through central Government's Sure Start Unit.
The new services being offered by Penwith's Family Services team at Newlyn include:
* A toy library session every other Monday morning
* A parenting course with a crèche on Tuesday mornings
* Family Support services
* Under one-year-olds group and baby club, supplemented with baby weighing and specialist advice sessions from a health visitor on Monday afternoons
* Benefits and debt advice surgery every other Thursday morning
* Family play and craft sessions on Thursday afternoons
* Community Development Workers
The Centre offers level access and drop-off point, a lift to all floors, heating, a fully equipped kitchen, wheelchair accessible toilets, baby changing facilities, broadband, a data projector, whiteboard, OHP and flip charts. It has two large halls, two training/meeting rooms and one small meeting room. For a full list of services and times please check online at www.thecentrenewlyn.ik.com or call 01736 365890.
Family Services Area Manager for Penwith Caroline Willis, said "We are really pleased that our work to bring more services to the community in Newlyn has come to fruition and services for families can be accessed by more and more people. We now have a strong network of centres and services throughout Penwith to help young families."
Jeremy Drew, Newlyn Centre Development Worker, said: "We are delighted to add services for families to the diverse activities already on offer at The Centre such as youth work, indoor bowls, computer training, and art groups. We hope that this is the beginning of a long working relationship with the Family Services team and that together we can build on the services available for residents of Newlyn and surrounding areas."
