Travel writer Polly Evans at Barnstaple Library

World Book Day at Barnstaple Library will be celebrated with the launch of the latest title by renowned travel writer, Polly Evans.

On a Hoof and a Prayer sees her learning to ride horses in South America.

Five years ago Polly Evans threw in her comfortable office job to take off on a bicycle tour of Spain.

The result of her endeavours was one very sore set of limbs and her first book, Its Not About the Tapas, which was short-listed for the WH Smith 'People's Choice Travel Writing award'.

She indulged in further escapades the following year, this time swapping pedal-power for a motorbike to travel around New Zealand and to write her second book, Kiwis Might Fly. Another adventure soon followed - travelling around China by public transport, hence the title Fried Eggs with Chopsticks.

Polly's journalism has appeared in magazines and newspapers including the Sunday Times, the Times, the Independent on Sunday and the Guardian.

She has won many awards for her writing and was the 2005 winner of the British Guild of Travel Writers' K W Jones Memorial Award. When she's not on the road, Polly lives in London. She is currently working on her fifth book about dogsledding in Canada's Yukon territory.

World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

Councillor Sheila Hobden, Executive Member for Culture, said: "Polly is an entertaining speaker and I am sure this will be a popular event, one of many which we will be holding across the county for World Book Day."

Polly will be visiting Barnstaple Library on Thursday 1 March at 7.30 p.m. The event will be supported by Waterstone's Bookshops, and copies of Polly's books will be on sale which she will be happy to sign at the end of her talk.

Tickets are on sale at Barnstaple Library priced at 3 per person to include refreshments. Telephone 01271 388759 to reserve your place.
