Distraction burglary - Woodstock
Posted: 16/02/2007 00:33:06
Police are urging the public to be on their guard following another distraction burglary in Woodstock on Monday (12/02).
One man knocked on an elderly couple's address in Cockpit Close between 4pm and 4.30pm. He stated he was from the Water Board and needed to check the water pressure. He turned the taps on and off and left.
The following day £70 cash and collectable coins were missing.
The man is 5ft 6ins, with black hair and was clean shaven and wore dark clothing. There was possibly a white van outside with a second man standing by it.
Sgt Craig Kirby, investigating the incident, said: “Unfortunately this is not an uncommon scam, and there was a similar burglary in Yarnton earlier the same day. I would like to use this incident to warn people that there are unscrupulous individuals out there who are visiting elderly and vulnerable individuals and pretending to be someone they are not.
“Often these types of offenders will claim to be from utility companies, but it is important to remember that the Water Board no longer exists.
“Never let anyone into your home if they call unexpectedly, even if they show you identification, but check with the company they claim to be from and make them wait, if they are genuine they will understand. It is also possible to set up passwords with the utility companies, which only they and you will know.
“Investing in a door chain can also be a few pounds well spent. If you have one fitted make sure you use it every time you open the door as it could help prevent offenders forcing their way in.
“Finally, if you think you have been approached by bogus callers, please contact police immediately and describe the people and vehicles involved. These types of offenders often make several attempts to trick their way into people’s homes, and the more information you can give will help police to build up a clear picture of the offenders and bring them to justice.” Police issue the following advice: Never let anyone into your home if they call unexpectedly, even if they show you identification.“
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sgt Craig Kirby via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505. If you do not wish to speak with police and do not want to leave your name you can pass information to the anonymous Crimestoppers service on 0800 555 111.
