People in Budleigh Salterton relieved at re-opening of toilets

Shoppers and residents in Budleigh Salterton are feeling relieved after the re-opening of the town centre toilets, thanks to an initiative by Budleigh Salterton Town Council supported by a 2,000 grant from Devon County Council.

The public conveniences in Brook Road have been out of action since a car ran into the rear of the building, causing structural damage 18 months ago.

The town has had to find 4,000 to repair the original damage before it could take over the running of the toilet block from East Devon District Council to save it from closure.

Councillor Ray Franklin, of East Devon District Council, has liaised with the town council to ensure the repairs have been carried out satisfactorily and the toilets thoroughly cleaned in order to be re-opened.

Local county councillor Christine Channon secured money from the County Committee's budget, and the rest of the funding has been raised locally.

Councillor Channon said: "Members of the public and local businesses insisted on the need for the toilets to re-open and we have listened and acted. I am particularly delighted that facilities for the disabled have once again been made available through these actions."

Mayor of Budleigh Salterton, Councillor Courtney Richards, said: "I am delighted that the Brook Road toilets have been re-opened. Their closure had a significant impact and the lack of toilet facilities near the town centre was a problem for both residents and visitors alike.

"If the toilets were demolished, there was the possibility that the whole site could have been sold for development, meaning the loss of the car park. With no toilets and no free car park close to the town centre, eventually people would start to shop elsewhere

"Now with the use of money raised from the local Council Tax Precept and a contribution of 2,000 from Devon County Council arranged by County Councillor Christine Channon, the car park is safe and the toilets are open again.

"The impact on the local precept will be less that 20p per annum per household and as a result, I think that this is one of the most beneficial things the Council has done for the town in recent years."
