Pathway to exciting pottery exhibition
Posted: 20/03/2007 09:49:32
Two new commissions inspired by the local landscape will feature at a spectacular exhibition of contemporary ceramics organised as part of a West Oxfordshire District Council project. Pathways - an exhibition of contemporary studio ceramics - opens in the Garden Gallery at The Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock, on April 1st and runs until May 19th. Entry is free. It will feature work by renowned Oxfordshire ceramicists Lucy Butterwick, Margaret O’Rorke and Richard Phethean and London-based Annie Turner. This includes the unveiling of new commissions by two of the artists which are inspired by the local landscape and created especially for the exhibition. The exhibition is part of the District Council’s Potters of Port Street (POPS) project, which is coming to an end following a series of successful events and community arts work running since the end of 2005. POPS is funded by Arts Council England and organised by the Council’s Arts Development team to celebrate ceramics in West Oxfordshire, past and present. The project’s name is inspired by the District’s A4095 route, which was known as Port Street in Saxon times. As part of the project, professional ceramicists have worked with children in schools along the A4095, including Bampton, Bladon, Clanfield, Our Lady of Lourdes in Witney and North Leigh, and their creations will feature as part of the exhibition in the Museum’s Brewhouse. Unique ceramics from the Oxfordshire Collection of Contemporary Craft will also be on display. Cllr Tony Walker, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “The POPS scheme has been a great success, involving a great deal of people and bringing to life our District’s rich pottery history. To have the support of the acclaimed ceramicists whose work will be on display is testament to this success. The exhibition should appeal to all tastes and I hope people will take the opportunity to see for themselves the good work that is happening.” POPS has also seen an exhibition of contemporary domestic pottery in Bampton in 2006, a team of artists working with community groups in Leafield to unlock the village’s pot-making history, and publication of a guide giving information about local ceramicists and attractions.
