Work starts on new school in Malmesbury

Posted: 21/03/2007 23:24:32

Work has started on a new £3.5 million primary school for children in Malmesbury.

The new building will provide a modern replacement for the existing Malmesbury Primary school when it is completed in 2008.

Children and teachers from the school are celebrating with Wiltshire County Council the star of work on their new home on Tetbury Hill.

The new school which is being built by contractor Stradform (South West), is due to be completed February in 2008 when children will be able to move into their new classrooms. It will have 14 classrooms and will serve 420 pupils.

Work on other parts of the scheme, including the demolition of the current school and the creation of a new access road and car park, will be finalised by the following June.

The design for the new building is unique in the county. The two-storey curved design resembles an 'S' or a question mark. It includes a partial 'green' roof where Sedum (a low growing plant) will be used as a roofing material to provide insulation and weather proofing and a new school hall that will also be available for community use.

For safety reasons during construction a separate vehicle access will mean that construction vehicles will not have to share access with parents and children going to and from the school.

Nancy Bryant, cabinet member for education, said: "It is a real delight to see that work has now started on this innovative replacement school.

"New school buildings such as these reflect our heartfelt desire to act locally to improve the opportunities and education of children in our communities."

Head teacher Jeff Staton said: "The whole school community is really excited now that work has begun. As we see the building taking shape all the waiting time seems worthwhile. Bringing the whole school together in one fantastic new building will be very special for us."
