Free property coding session

Posted: 01/05/2007 14:11:33

People in Wyre Forest are being offered the chance to get their garden tools and other valuables property coded by police free of charge.

A property marking day is to be held at Focus Do It All on Spennells Valley Road, Kidderminster, on Thursday, May 10 between 10am and 4pm when thermal property marking labels will be issued along with advice on garden and home security.

Wyre Forest Crime Risk Manager PC Ian White and members of the Local Policing Team for Spennells and Aggborough will be providing people with batches of the specially coded labels which can be stuck on to lawn mowers, other expensive tools and household valuables such as electrical goods.

PC White said the stickers would be issued free to anyone who attended but people would need to bring some current proof of address, such as a utility bill.

He said: “When the gardening season is in full swing, as it is now, we usually see an increase in shed and garden burglaries in general, so it is important that people take whatever precautions they can to avoid being targeted and make it as difficult as possible for thieves. If your property is recovered after being stolen then having it coded enables us to identify where it comes from and return it to its rightful owner.”

Officers will be also be handing out a new leaflet entitled Tips to Nip Garden Crime in the Bud, highlighting the security measure people can take to protect their outdoor property.

Top tips for keeping gardens and sheds secure are:

* Low energy, dusk to dawn security lighting is cheap to run and better for security than passive, infrared activated lighting.
* Ensure rear garden fences are high enough to make climbing them difficult. A trellis can be used for additional height.
* Defensive planting can be used to deter burglars by using prickly plants such as roses, berberis and holly. Use this around vulnerable areas such as windows, fences, boundary walls and drainpipes.
* Keep your shed in good condition and fit a close shackle padlock to the door. Fittings should be bolted through the door and any screws concealed. Invest in an alarm.
* Ensure large items such as bicycles are chained together to make it difficult for thieves to carry away.
