New police base

Posted: 06/05/2007 12:59:40

A new police base in a Kidderminster tower block will be opened next week.

The Broadwaters local police base on the ground floor of Windermere House, Grasmere Close, will be opened by Rev Canon Owain Bell from St Mary’s and All Saints Church.

Rev Bell was chairman of the Horsefair and Broadwaters Partnership, which has now become the Greenhill and Broadwaters Pathfinder.

The opening, at 3pm on Wednesday 9th May, will be attended by West Mercia’s Chief Constable Mr Paul West and other guests including councillors and representatives of partner organisations.

The new base will provide office accomodation for 11 officers – Sergeant Kevin Lane, two Local Policing Officers, four Local Response Officers, and Four Community Support Officers.

The base will have an interview room, and when officers are there, members of the local community are welcome to attend to report crimes or discuss any concerns or issues they wish to raise.

However there are no formal opening hours or public front counter facilities and these will continue to be provided by the main police station in Habberley Road, Kidderminster.

Sergeant Lane said: “The initiative centres on locating officers into the heart of the community and by cutting down on travel times from the main station, it enables them to respond more quickly to call-outs, as well as increasing visibility and providing greater public reassurance.”

Chief Inspector Jim Baker added: “The base is the third to open in Kidderminster, following the opening of the Comberton police base on 30th April, and the Birchen Coppice base in November 2005 and is part of our commitment to the neighbourhood policing programme, which aims to make officers more accessible to the public."

“It is also part of the police’s contribution to the Greenhill and Broadwaters Pathfinder, a multi agency project to improve residents’ quality of life.”
The accomodation has been provided by Wyre Forest Community Housing.

The new base is protected by Smartwater, so anyone breaking in will be sprayed with forensically coded water which glows under ultra violet light but is invisible to the naked eye.
