Pupils Muck In To Celebrate Compost Week
Posted: 11/05/2007 13:25:12
Green-minded pupils at The Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water, have been mucking in to support Compost Awareness Week.
The environmentally-friendly school composts its kitchen and garden waste and the enthusiastic students are now urging others to follow their example.
Two years ago, the school set up an Eco Council and it has since been recycling paper, cards, cardboard, stamps, plastics and even computers!
Suzanne Boyce, one of the key teachers involved in the Eco Council, said: “We started composting this year and it’s a great way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites and cut pollution.
“It also produces a fantastic free fertiliser to use on the school grounds. We work in close partnership with our groundsmen and it’s a collaboration that is yielding some great results.
“The pupils are very enthusiastic and we would encourage people in other schools and homes throughout the Cotswolds to start composting to help the environment.”
People who buy a compost bin this week could win £100 of garden centre vouchers in a competition being run by The Recycle Now Home Composting Campaign to celebrate Compost Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday (May 12th).
Anyone who places an order before Sunday will be eligible for the prize, which has been donated by DHL, the logistics company that delivers the bins. Throughout 2007, residents can buy compost bins from £8, including delivery, by logging on to www.recyclenow.com/compost or phoning 0845 077 0757.
Cotswold District Council Waste Manager Scott Williams said: “Almost anything organic can be composted - from shredded paper and scrunched up cardboard to egg shells and grass cuttings.
“If everyone in the District followed The Cotswold School pupils’ example, we could dramatically reduce the amount of waste that is being sent to landfill.”
