Man arrested for illegal street trading

A man has been charged with engaging in street trading in Oxford without being authorised to do so.

The arrest on Friday (1/6) comes after police and Oxford City Council received complaints from legal traders in the city about illegal pedlars.

PC Steve Mather, of Oxford Police’s city centre unit, said: “We have received complaints from the council and also local businesses about illegal street trading in the area and we are working to put a stop to it.

“I hope this reassures local businesses and traders that we will intervene if someone is not trading in compliance with the law.”

Councillor Jean Fooks, Executive Member for a Cleaner City at Oxford City Council said: "We have a continuing problem with illegal street traders especially at the weekend.

“This sends a strong message to people who may think about trying to do this in Oxford that we will take the issue seriously and we will work with the police to prevent it."
