Technology Targets Illegal Drivers in Operation Brogue
Three people were arrested and eight vehicles confiscated as Gloucester Police cracked down on illegal drivers and criminals using the City's roads in Operation Brogue. Thirty officers took part in the initiative which ran throughout yesterday and Monday in the Barton Street Inspector Neighbourhood Area. It involved the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology to target known offenders, vehicles suspected of having been involved in crime and/or drivers without the correct documentation. Operated from police vans, ANPR instantly alerts officers when vehicles linked with offences or registered to wanted people and known criminals go by. It also raises the alarm when untaxed or uninsured vehicles and those driven by disqualified motorists pass. The Constabulary's high-performance Mitsubishi Evo vehicle and off-road motorbikes were also involved in the Operation to ensure anyone picked out by the ANPR who attempted to make off from Police were swiftly stopped. Soon after the start of Operation Brogue, the Evo was involved in a brief pursuit. The driver was stopped after two minutes and arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, no insurance and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, he was later charged with these offences and driving without due care and attention. His vehicle and seven others were also confiscated for being driven without insurance. Two further drivers were also arrested on suspicion of motoring offences. Local intelligence officer PC Bailey who co-ordinated the Operation explained ANPR is an ideal way of targeting those committing crime and travelling in potentially dangerous uninsured vehicles or without a licence without disrupting the law-abiding public. "These operations are intelligence-led and use modern multi-agency technology to pinpoint criminality", he said. "At the click of a button we can see those who haven't got insurance or tax or who are disqualified, for example. If you're a decent member of the public driving legally, you have nothing to worry about, this technology enables us to pick on the right people." Adding that ANPR also helps combat those involved in crime other than motoring offences, PC Bailey continued: "Offenders make use of our roads both to commit crime and to do things like take the kids to school. Thanks to this tool, we are alerted when wanted people and vehicles suspected of being involved in crime pass. We will continue to make use of ANPR and the message to criminals is they will be caught." Operation Brogue was run in Banebury Road, Linden Road, Tredworth Road and Park End Road. Representatives of the Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenue and Customs and the Immigration Service also took part. The DWP is now dealing with one person picked up during Operation Brogue, amongst some other more protracted enquiries.
