Step back in time at Bromsgrove Police open day
Posted: 08/07/2007 17:48:48
Visitors to Bromsgrove Police Station's open day will be able to step back in time and see uniforms and equipment dating back more than 100 years.
Officers will be dressed in tunics, capes and helmets dating from the turn of the 20th century, and equipment including old truncheons, early models of radios and mobile phones, and even a ball and chain will be on display. The open day takes place the police station, in The Crescent, on Sunday 15th July from 11am to 3pm.
Sergeant John Cashion, one of the organisers of the open days, said: "We thought that as West Mercia Constabulary is celebrating its 40th anniversary in October, it would be nice to give this year's open days a historical theme. "While helmets haven't changed radically in design, the contrast with other parts of our current uniform is very marked.
"As for the old equipment, it's fascinating to see how big and cumbersome it is compared to its modern day equivalents. For example we have an early model of a mobile phone, which is the size of a house brick and demonstrates just how quickly technology has moved on in 15 years or so.
"The open day is a great day out for all the family, with lots to see and do." Attractions include a children’s face painter, the opportunity to see a custody cell and have fingerprints and photographs taken for Wanted posters, a range of police vehicles including a mobile CCTV van, motorbikes, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) car and fast response vehicle, a display of public order equipment, display stands and a fire brigade demonstration.
Youngsters will also have the chance to play detective by examining a mock crime scene and a specialist handler will be taking along a police dog to explain the unit’s vital role in combating crime.
There are also goodie bags, and free competitions, with prizes including family days out at the West Midland Safari and Leisure Park, Severn Valley Railway and Avoncroft Museum, near Bromsgrove.
Donations on the day will go to the County Air Ambulance.
Parking is available in town centre car parks.
The following Sunday, 22nd July, is Redditch Police Station's open day and Kidderminster's is on Sunday, 2nd September, also both from 11am till 3pm.
