Invite for Young People in South Cheltenham to Have Their Say
All young people in south Cheltenham are being invited to a series of road shows being held in July to discuss youth provisions in the area. The initiative being run by SCYP (South Cheltenham Youth Project) aims to find out what young people think should be available to them in their neighbourhood. SCYP, launched in April, is a partnership of agencies, which includes, Police, Cheltenham Borough Council representatives, the youth service, local councillors and South Cheltenham Children and Young People's Group (SCYPG). It has the following aims...
* To reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour in the South Cheltenham * To address problems caused by the presence of young people in South Cheltenham * To provide facilities for young people through the exploration of venues within the South Cheltenham area * To encourage young people to take responsibility for their actions and behaviour
PC Ian Miles, from Leckhampton Safer Community Team is involved in the up coming road shows, he said: "We thought it was necessary to consult the young people before any building work or strategic decisions were made. We want to hear for anyone who is under the age of 18 and who lives in south Cheltenham. "This is not a request for unrealistic thoughts but it is a genuine opportunity for local young people to tell the authorities what they feel and how we can all work together to improve dialogue and respect for each other." The road shows are being held on... Monday 23 July - Benhall Park, Benhall Tuesday 24 July - Grange Field, Charlton Kings Wednesdsay 25 July - Naunton Park, Leckhampton Thursday 26 July - Brizen Fields, Up Hatherley The events will start at around 6pm and go on until 8pm. Young people will have a chance to speak to members of the youth service, local police, play rangers, park rangers and the youth council. They will be asked to complete a survey by members of the youth service and this will then be collated by the Cheltenham Community Safety Partnership. PC Ian Miles from the Leckhampton Safer Community Team says " We have been working in conjunction with the Cheltenham Community Safety Partnership and other agencies since early April and this consultation is the beginning of the second phase of the process. "It is important that we canvas the opinions of the youth to understand what they require, it is also an opportunity for the Youth Service to gauge the depth of the problem and hopefully locate some resources into the area in an effort to alleviate the lack of facilities within South Cheltenham." The events are being sponsored by Spar Stores of Caernarvon Court. Other local companies and organisations have made major contributions, Creed Catering supplies are donating the food, Cheltenham College have provided the barbeque and Star FM are publicising the events.
