The High Cost of Not Buying Car Tax

Drivers Discover the High Cost of Not Buying Car Tax in Gloucester
Several Gloucester drivers are now paying the high price of not buying their car tax following a successful operation by City police and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Police Community Support Officers Mark Jones, Stacey Lee, Mohamed Ginwalla and David Birch of the Barton Street Safer Community Team joined two DVLA representatives this week to scour the area for vehicles not displaying a valid tax disc. Sixteen such illegal motorists were discovered in roads around Barton, Tredworth and Matson and their vehicles were clamped on Monday. One driver then quickly paid the release fee but the others were towed away on Tuesday. Their owners are now having to fork out a far heftier sum than the tax would have cost them to get them back. Warning that similar checks would be carried out on a regular basis, PCSO Jones said: "We are continuing to listen to members of the community's concerns and actively seeking to bring justice to those who choose to break the law. "It is an offence to have a vehicle on the highway without a valid excise licence and you may lose your car as a result. The DVLA has an automatic numberplate recognition system that can detect un-taxed vehicles by reading vehicle registration plates as they drive past. It's virtually impossible to avoid detection." Any untaxed vehicle found on a public road may be clamped by a DVLA wheelclamping contractor. It will only be released on payment of £80 and the production of a tax disc. If a tax disc can't be produced, a surety of £120 for a car or motorcycle or up to £600 for other vehicles is demanded, this sum is forfeited if a disc is not produced within two weeks. Untaxed vehicles may also be towed away and impounded. The release fee for impounded vehicles is £160 and on top of that there is a storage charge of £15 per day. A valid tax disc or surety payment is also required before impounded vehicles can be released. Unclaimed vehicles may be crushed after seven days. Owners of untaxed vehicles also face prosecution with fines of up to £1,000 plus the back tax owed and court costs. Clamping vans patrolling the streets are all fitted with Automatic Number Plate Reader technology which checks every vehicle they pass against the DVLA's list of untaxed ones.
