Police Team's Fund-Raising For New York Marathon
Posted: 21/09/2007 10:30:41
Three Shrewsbury police officers will be disco dancing to help raise funds for their New York marathon charity run.
Police Constable Andy Gardner, CSO Derek Hughes-Beddows and Special Constable Andy Malin are stepping up their sponsorship drive as they train for the world-famous event in November.
Their sponsorship target is £6,600 and although they are over half-way, they are busy organising further fund-raising events to ensure they reach it in time. The money is being donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The trio are holding a Halloween disco dance at the Four Crosses, Bicton from 7.30pm on October 27, including food, raffle and an auction. Tickets cost £14 and are available by calling 07920 775528.
They also received a recent boost from Westbury Saab on Featherbed Lane, Shrewsbury in the form a cheque for £100.
It was prompted by Derek's close relationship with Westbury, having owned 16 Saabs over the years. He said: "Jon Edwards and the staff at Westbury have always supported charity events I have undertaken and are always willing to help any way they can.
"It's a lovely gesture and one we really appreciate," he added. Meanwhile, the sponsorship fund will receive another boost next week thanks to a ramble earlier this month by pupils of Stiperstones Primary School, where PC Gardner's wife Caroline is headteacher.
The pupils, together with PC Gardner and his five-year-old daughter Alice, walked from Snailbeach village hall up into the hills in a loop circuit covering several miles. One of the youngsters now stands to receive a gift of a brand new bike for their efforts.
"Shrewsbury Cycles on Ditherington Road have donated a pushbike to our marathon cause," said PC Gardner. "All the pupils who took part in the sponsored walk will have their names put into a hat and the one pulled out will win the bike. We wanted to show our appreciation to them for their fund-raising efforts." The officers wont know how much money was raised from the walk until they visit the school on Friday (Sept. 28) when they will present the bike. Over the next few weeks, all three will be focussing on their training as the big day on November 4 draws nearer.
In line with their policing background, the two Andys will run in uniform and CSO Hughes-Beddows will dress as a crook for the gruelling 26.2 mile event – complete with mask, stripy top and a bag of swag.
Constable Gardner's own son Harry, who needed urgent surgery as a baby three years ago, inspired the choice of Great Ormond Street Hospital as their chosen charity.
He thanked everyone who has contributed so far but appealed for further sponsorship donations to be made through their website www.justgiving.com/copsontherun
"We've set up the website for anyone who wants to help us towards our total, through which they can donate safely and securely," PC Gardner added.
