Celebration of 60 years of meals on wheels

Christchurch Mayor helps to celebrate 60 years of Meals on Wheels
The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Josephine Spencer, donned her apron to help distribute meals to some Christchurch residents as part of the national Mayors for Meals Day.
The Day formed part of Meals on Wheels Week, the aim of which was to draw public and government attention to the important role the Meals on Wheels service plays in looking after some of the most vulnerable members of our community - primarily older people.
This year sees the Diamond Jubilee of the service, which is organised by members of The National Association of Care Catering.
The Mayor joined volunteers for the day in distributing some of the meals and said: "Meals on Wheels provides an essential service to so many people in Christchurch who otherwise would not be getting a proper meal. Many of these people would be at risk of malnutrition if it were not for the valuable efforts of the NACC and the volunteers who work so hard on a daily basis to deliver the meals.
"Their work also helps many older people to stay in their own homes and maintain their independence. I am delighted to be supporting this initiative and congratulate Meals on Wheels on the 60th anniversary of this valuable service."
