Redditch Police Open Day

Posted: 04/10/2007 10:56:41

Vintage police cars, uniform and equipment will be on display for visitors to Redditch Police Station’s Open Day on Sunday, October 14.

The historical theme will reflect West Mercia Constabulary’s 40th anniversary celebrations, which are now under way, and will add to new attractions at this year’s event which promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The open day was originally scheduled for July 22 but had to be called off due to resources being diverted to deal with the flooding crisis which hit the county that weekend.

Inspector Ian Joseph said: “We regretfully had to call off the day last time due to exceptional and unprecedented circumstances but Sunday’s event will go ahead even if the weather takes a turn for the worst. We have a packed programme of attractions and activities lined up and we intend to ensure that everyone has a cracking day out.”

New attractions will include police uniform and equipment dating back to the early 1900s as well as face-painting by local artist, Helen Elvins, who was part of a team which set a new world record for face painting on televison during the BBC’s Children In Need appeal last November.

Vintage vehicle enthusiasts will be displaying police liveried models from yesteryear while music will be provided by the West Mercia Constabulary Band during the afternoon.

Three prominent members of the local community (Councillor David Hunt - the Mayor of Redditch, Roger Satterthwaite - assistant head at Arrowvale High School and Paul Farzam - the manager at Redditch Sainsbury’s store) will also be ‘arrested’ and placed in a cell as part of the Lock Up Your Boss charity initiative, in aid of County Air Ambulance.

Competitions including tombola will also offer great prizes including trips to Cadbury World, West Midland Safari and Leisure Park and the Severn Valley Railway.

As last year, the day will provide a great opportunity for people to come and see what the police do, the equipment they use and to have a look around parts of the station.

There will again be an opportunity to see the custody block and to have fingerprints and photographs taken for ‘Wanted Posters’ – a firm favourite with the children last year.

Visitors will also be able to see a mobile CCTV van in action and look around some of the other vehicles police use, including motorbikes, the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) car and fast response vehicle, as well as a display of public order equipment.

Youngsters will also have the chance to play detective by examining a mock crime scene and a specialist dog handler will be taking along a police dog to explain the unit’s vital role in combating crime.

Stands will include displays on drug awareness and crime prevention, recruitment, diversity, and PACT (Partners and Communities Together).

The fire brigade will also be giving a demonstration.

Inspector Joseph added: “The open day provides a marvellous opportunity for us to engage with the local community. Entry is free and we have new games and competitions organised as well as plenty of balloons and other police-related goodies to hand out – so we’re confident that no-one will leave empty handed or disappointed.”

The open day will run from 11am to 3pm at Redditch police station in Grove Street with free parking available in nearby town centre car parks.
