Shrewsbury Fishing Group to Reach New Heights

Posted: 09/10/2007 17:38:30

Youngsters hooked in a new sport in Shrewsbury will get the chance to reach greater heights thanks to their local police officers.

Get Hooked on Fishing (GHOF) launched in Meole Brace this summer and has proved to be a big hit with youngsters who otherwise had little to do on the estate.
Now the area’s local policing team – including Constable Pete Franklin and CSOs Helen Mitchell and Catherine Williams – are to take the youngsters on a trip to Shrewsbury Sports Village to tackle the climbing wall.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 11th and, if successful, Constable Franklin said such an activity might be rolled out to other areas in the future.

He said: "We have been doing a lot of work with the council, community and other partners to try and address problems with anti-social behaviour in the area and give these young people something they can be a part of and enjoy.
“All young people in the area are welcome to take part and we've had some really good feedback. They really seem to be enjoying it.

"The Get Hooked on Fishing group has been a big success, so much so that the young people involved are keen to take part in a clean-up of the Reabrook in the near future.

"We've arranged for those same youngsters to take part in a climbing wall evening at the Sports Village in Sundorne, which we feel will really help some of them with their self-discipline and self-esteem.
"Many of these kids might not otherwise have the chance to do something like this and it is important that we help in any way they can. We're a part of their community too.

"We'd also like to thank McDonalds in Meole Brace, which is providing a meal for all the kids after the climb. The staff there feel they are a big part of the community and are very keen to get involved."

Constable Franklin added that the work done so far appeared to have made a real difference to people living in the Meole area.
“The youngsters have something to do, which in turn keeps them off the streets of Meole and cuts down on the number of anti-social behaviour incidents reported to police,” he said.

"When large groups gather in the street with nothing to do, there is the potential for problems to occur. But you can't just break them up and move them on, it has to be a balanced approach with something for them to move on to.”
Constable Franklin and CSOs Mitchell and Williams will be at Shrewsbury Sports Village on the night, along with Kelly Oldham from Shropshire County Council to help with the activities.

If it is a success, then youngsters in other areas might also be able to take part if it is rolled-out across the town.

Constable Dave Round, also a local police officer for the area, helped set up the GHOF scheme with the council and the Environment Agency. He is an experience angler and was keen to put his skills to good use.
