Police Warn Speeding Motorists in Oswestry Area

Posted: 09/11/2007 17:20:31

Police are stepping up efforts to detect motorists speeding through villages in the Oswestry area.

Random speed checks are to be carried out in the Oswestry Rural South area following complaints by local residents about drivers tearing through their villages.

Villages concerned include Treflach, Trefonen, Maesbury and Maesbury Marsh, Ruyton-XI-Towns, West Felton, Pant, Llanymynech, Morda, Kinnerley and Knockin.

The Local Policing Officer for Oswestry Rural South, PC Pete Dale, said: “Due to continuing public concern expressed at numerous parish council and Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings, I am undertaking rigorous speed enforcement in the area’s villages.”

PC Dale said he wanted to give motorists due warning. “I do not enjoy issuing £60 fines and causing the endorsement of driving licences, which is why I am appealing for drivers to adhere to the speed limits and drive with respect and consideration for village residents.”

He said the laser detection speed checks would be conducted at random locations and times.

Road safety is a top priority for West Mercia Constabulary and the Force is committed to reducing road casualties.

Speed is one of the “Seven Deadly Sins” – the name of West Mercia’s ongoing road safety campaign. The other “Deadly Sins” are drink and drug driving, seatbelt safety, mobile phone safety, motorcycle safety, vehicle maintenance an poor driving.
