Skate ramps in Bromsgrove get a new look

Posted: 18/11/2007 01:12:31

Skateboard ramps in Bromsgrove's Sanders Park have been given a new look, thanks to an arts project.

The £1,500 project has been jointly funded by West Mercia Constabulary, Bromsgrove District Council, and Community First in Herefordshire and Worcestershire through the Elmley Small Grants Arts Fund.

The project began in summer 2006, when local youths were invited to join the design project to create new artwork on the ramps.

Internationally renowned graffiti artist Phil Shore from Canada was initially involved in the project to paint the ramps in graffiti style. The project was then continued and completed by David Brown.

Local Policing officer PC Steve Yapp said: "Before I became a police officer I was a graphic designer, and I could see the benefits in engaging young people in an arts project.

"The skateboard park is very much a facility for young people and it made sense to get them involved in every aspect of it.

"Involving youths in an arts project like this not only helps reduce anti social behaviour but challenges the public perceptions of young people by showing them in a positive light, and West Mercia Constabulary is very pleased to have been able to support it."

Councillor Mrs June Griffiths, Bromsgrove District Council's Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Leisure Services, said: “It is nice that the young people of Bromsgrove have personalised this space through their art work, guided by a professional graffiti artist.”
