Mental Health Cash Boost for Swindon Youngsters
Posted: 03/02/2008 13:10:42
Swindon Borough Council is one of 25 local authorities that have been selected to be a pathfinder for the Targeted Mental Health in Schools Project.
The council will receive over £700,000 from the Department for Children Schools and Families for the pilot project, which will be distributed in three phases between 2008 and 2011. It will be used to deliver better support for those children who are at risk or who are already experiencing mental health problems.
In Swindon, the council will be working in partnership with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) at the following secondary schools:
* Churchfields School * Greendown Community School * Dorcan Technology College * St Luke’s School... and their linked primary schools
The partners will work with schools, which have all chosen to be involved, developing innovative approaches to mental health support, to ensure holistic help and support is easily accessible to those children and their families who need it.
The council will be able to use the funding for:
Mental health project workers, experienced specialist mental health staff therapists; The development and delivery of effective training and support for practitioners Group work and support delivered to children in schools building self esteem, self confidence and reducing stress and anxiety among children and young people The Swindon project will be evaluated alongside other pilots to identify successful models of mental health support, and the findings will inform the roll-out of Targeted Mental Health in Schools nationally in 2009/10 and 2010/11.
