Police help with Operation Coac for half term

Posted: 06/02/2008 23:37:19

Telford Police are taking part in the Home Office funded ‘Confiscation of Alcohol Campaign’ 2008, (COAC), that runs from February 8th to February 24th to coincide with schools half term.

Partners from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Licensing Department, Trading Standards, Connexions 4 Youth and the Primary Care Trust are also taking part in the operation, which is being run as part of the Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership.

The varied aims of the campaign are to conduct a focused and targeted campaign to work towards the reduction of alcohol-related crime and disorder by young people, and to use robust policing to tackle the crime and disorder often caused by young people in possession of alcohol.

Using powers contained within the Confiscation of Alcohol Act 1997, officers will be able to remove alcohol from the streets across the town in an attempt to prevent any potential crime and disorder that could be caused by the misuse of alcohol.

They will also be able to use powers that state that persons aged 16 and over can be ‘Directed to Leave’ a specific area should it be deemed necessary.

Local Policing Support Sergeant Paul Franks said:

“During the operational period, Local Police Officers and Community Support Officers will be visiting their identified ‘hot spot’ locations where young people congregate to consume alcohol.

“These visits will provide the officers with opportunities to engage with the young people and take action where necessary. It will also provide the communities the officers serve with high visibility patrols and added reassurance that this type of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

“I would like to remind the public that this operation will also look at the issue of ‘proxy sales’. Please remember that if you buy or supply alcohol to your son, daughter, brother, sister or any other people under 18, you are potentially committing a criminal offence.

“ I would also ask members of the public to contact their Local Policing Team on 08457 444 888 if they know of a particular location where this behaviour is taking place, so that we can then look at any of the specific concerns they wish to raise.”
