Funding for school environmental garden
Posted: 12/02/2008 10:11:38
A viewing platform and walkway are to be created in the environmental garden at St Peter's Church of England Primary School in Budleigh Salterton, thanks to a £1,000 grant from Devon County Council.
The pond and bog garden have been created in the primary school grounds over the past year with the help of volunteer parents and local residents.
The County Council has helped support the scheme with £1,000 from Councillor Christine Channon's County Committee Locality Fund. The money will pay for a decking walkway providing wheelchair access by the pond, and a viewing platform to enable pupils to study the wildlife in the garden.
Councillor Christine Channon, Devon County Councillor for Budleigh, said: "I think it's really important to encourage children to enjoy the environment and to understand the wonders of nature. I admire the constructive work the parents and children have put towards this project already, and I would like to think that every child has an opportunity to share in this."
Headteacher Sally Roberts said: "A lot of hard work has gone into this lovely garden with special big thanks to parents and Tess Stone. Once the decking and bridge are complete, the garden will be a wonderful experience for all the children."
Parent Tess Stone, who has helped co-ordinate the project, said: "This money means we can finish off the decking which is really important to get the area open to use safely, which will be fantastic. The children get really excited to see it, and my passion has been to get children outdoors. A lot of children may not have gardens at home, so having this at school means they are experiencing nature and enjoying outdoor learning."
The school is looking for more help to continue the next phase of the project, with plans for interpretation boards, a bird hide and the planting of shrubs and soft fruit bushes. Anyone who would like to help should call Tess Stone on 01395 445608 or contact the school on 01395 443167.
