Purse Security Chains A Big Hit With Shoppers

Posted: 22/02/2008 22:52:08

Shoppers in Shrewsbury have been quick to take advantage of a police crime prevention initiative designed to protect them from purse-snatching thieves.

Several hundred purse snatch chains available at the town centre police office since last Saturday, have been snapped up.

The devices, which are free and take just a few seconds to fit, have been on offer all week. The demand has been so great that only a handful are left.

PC Dave Walton, who introduced the initiative, said he was delighted with the response. Its been so good we are now seeking funding to purchase some more, hopefully another 500.

Although some chains were placed in various shops and other areas where purse thefts have occurred, the vast majority have been taken by shoppers calling at the police office and being shown by counter clerk Karen Preece how easy they are to fit.

PC Walton said: Were delighted with the product and delighted with the response.

The new initiative was launched to counter thieves on the lookout for easy pickings. During the last four months of 2007, a total of 29 purse thefts were reported in the Shrewsbury area 27 of them in the town centre.

The majority of the victims were elderly and vulnerable women shoppers.

One end of the purse chain is attached to the purse and the other end to the handbag or shopping bag. If a thief tries to steal the purse, the shopper will feel a tug. The chain is strong has proved to be a success.

But PC Walton added that the best security was personal care. If people remember to keep their purses out of sight, well down in the handbags or shopping bags with the top securely fastened while remembering not to leave their bags unattended, it is likely they will not be targeted.

The initial batch of purse chains were funded by the Shrewsbury Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. PC Walton said he would publicise when further chains were available.
