Police Assist with College Course
Posted: 03/04/2008 13:12:16
Police officers have been helping run a course for Shrewsbury students looking for a career in the uniformed services.
Their involvement at Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology has been paying dividends with several of the students taking up police jobs in the county.
Police Constable Steve Harris, the Local Police Officer for Bowbrook and Porthill, has been a part-time lecturer at the college in London Road for four years. He teaches on the Public Uniformed Services course assisting tutors Simon Twigger and Paula Cleaver.
He lectures students on one and two year courses designed to give BTEC qualifications for careers in such uniformed services as the police, fire service, ambulance service, the military and the prison service.
“I’ve really enjoyed my involvement with the college and helping the students. The work has also enabled me to obtain teaching qualifications which in turn help me deliver lessons to schools and youth groups, “ said PC Harris.
Two ex students from the course have now fulfilled their ambition to carryout police work.
Emily Marrs has been a Special Constable for the past six months and is currently attached to the Bowbrook and Porthill Local Policing Team led by PC Harris. Her long-term aim is to become a police officer.
And Hannah Bishop has been accepted as a Community Support Officer and is due to start training later this month. She will be posted to Oswestry on completion of her training.
PC Harris is not alone in providing police input on the Public Uniformed Services course. Local Policing Officer Pete Franklin has also been helping out, and Forensic Investigator Dominic Black runs regular lessons at the college and recently mounted a major incident training exercise.
The College’s Public Services Programme Leader, Simon Twigger, said: “We have people from a number of uniformed services who assist with our teaching, providing real hands-on experience. The police have been very helpful in providing an insight into the nature of their work and we really appreciate the efforts of PC Harris and other officers from Shrewsbury.
“We have an excellent working partnership with the police including being allowed to visit various sections of the police station such as the control room and custody suite. It is particularly pleasing to see some of our students graduating into police roles on completion of their course.”
