Rotary undertaking Sponsored Walk
Posted: 04/04/2008 15:39:08
On Saturday 19th April members of The Rotary Club of Witney, led by their President Maurice Robinson, will be undertaking a sponsored 20.7km (12.86miles) on behalf of ‘The One Foundation Charity’ and it’s ‘One Water Project’.
Worldwide one Billion people do not have access to clean water. Each year 2,000,000, mainly children, die from drinking contaminated water. It has been estimated that 40 billion miles are walked each year by people in search of clean water. That equates to 5 miles per person each day.
The ‘One Water’ project was the brainchild of a local man, Duncan Goose, who gave up a lucrative job in advertising to concentrate on providing the means by which people in remote African villages can obtain clean drinking water. Duncan formed a company producing bottled water under the ’One Water’ label. All the profits from the sale of the bottled water fund roundabout powered water pumps in Africa.
In his first six months of trading he managed to sell 12,000 bottles of ‘One Water’. In little over four years his company are selling 1,400,000 bottles per month and production is continuing to grow. At long last people in some of the remotest parts of Africa now have access to fresh clean water. A by-product is the fact that school attendance in the villages has risen by 341/2% because the children do not have to walk great distances each day for water.
On the 19th April family and friends will join the Rotarians on their sponsored walk in aid of such a worthwhile cause. If you would like to find out more about this charity, take part in the walk or sponsor someone who is, please visit the Club website at witneyrotary.co.uk
