High visibility vests boost school’s road safety

Posted: 15/04/2008 19:25:29

Road safety has been boosted at Matchborough First School in Redditch where all the children have received free high visibility vests as part of an initiative involving a bus company, the police and borough council.

First Midland Red Buses Ltd have presented 350 of the high vis vests, which have reflective strips, to all the pupils, including nursery children, as part of the Matchborough Safer Routes for Schools project. The project stemmed from a road safety summit held last summer to look at various issues involving getting children to school safely. This was set up by Local Policing Officer Pc Paul Downes and Councillor Juliet Brunner under the umbrella of the Matchborough Youth Engagement Task Force.

Matchborough First School Headteacher Jackie Harris explained: “This initiative developed after parents expressed concerns about road safety. I had discussions with Councillor Brunner about the issue in general and the lack of barriers outside the school gates which I understand are to be provided by the council this year.

“These vests will make the children more visible on the road for cars, buses and van drivers. If children can be seen then that’s half the battle.”

She added that apart from wearing them to and from school the vests would also be useful for school trips and extra curricular activities. It linked in with other road safety initiatives at the school including pedestrian training which had been organised for Year Four before Christmas and ongoing cycle training.

Pc Downes said that concerns about road safety at the school had also been raised at PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings as well at through road policing and highways agency meetings.

He said : “These vests will make a tremendous contribution to the safety of children in the area and road safety in general. We are very grateful to the bus company for their support.”

Marketing Manager for First Midland Red Buses, Ady (correct) Culpin, said: “First are pleased to be supporting the Safer Routes for Schools initiative for Matchborough school. I am sure that anything that makes the journey to school safer for children will be welcomed by parents and we are pleased to be taking part in this local partnership between the Constabulary, borough council and the school.”
