Ludlow Police Offer Free UV pens
Posted: 16/04/2008 23:36:37
Detectives in Ludlow are offering free marker pens to help youngsters in the town protect their computer games.
The offer follows a growing number of household burglaries in which electronic computer games and consoles have been targeted.
Detective Constable Scott Ward said six homes in Ludlow had been burgled during the past month, and video games were among the most common items stolen.
“We want teenagers to be aware that this has been happening and we want to do something to help them protect their games and equipment,” said DC Ward.
He said front counter staff at Ludlow police station in Lower Galdeford had 200 specialist UV pens to give away. “Any youngster calling in between the hours of 9am and 3pm during the week, including weekends, will be able to collect one of the pens.
“They will then be able to mark their property with an identifying mark, such as their initials or postcode. When we recover stolen property, it becomes a much easier task to trace the owner if goods are marked. If games and other expensive items have been marked with a UV pen, it will show up when scanned with ultra violet light.”
DC Ward said it had proved difficult in the past identifying the owners when stolen goods were recovered. “Often, there is no way of knowing who the owner is, but if property has been UV marked it makes our task so much easier and vastly increases the prospects of the goods being reunited with their rightful owner.”
He said the pens could also be used to security mark other items such as bikes and power tools. “However, we are appealing to youngsters in particular to take advantage of this free offer to protect their valued items. At the end of the day, if their X-box or prized computer games are stolen, then this initiative will greatly increase the odds of them being safely returned.”
