Successful Amnesty For Illegally Tinted Vehicles
Posted: 29/04/2008 22:34:57
An amnesty for vehicles fitted with illegally tinted windows has been hailed a success by police in North Devon.
Police held the amnesty in the civic centre car park of Barnstaple on Sunday April 20. Using light meters, police detected that 17 cars were found with tinted front windows that did not allow enough light into the vehicle.
The law states that tinted windows on the driver and passenger front windows must be clear enough to enable 70% of light through them. Furthermore, windscreens must allow 75% of light into the vehicle.
14 of the 17 vehicles that did not comply with the law - including one car which had front windows that only allowed 12% of light in - had the tint on their windows removed by having the covering peeled off.
Road Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Nick Porter, said: "The aim of this amnesty was to give drivers the opportunity to test whether the tint on their front windows complied with law.
"The problem with tinted windows that are too dark is that driver visibility is greatly reduced which can lead to fatal or serious accidents.
"I would urge all drivers who have tinted a windscreen or windows to have them removed. Motorists that fail to do so run the risk of prosecution or, in worst case scenarios, disqualification."
