Recycling centre success in Bideford

Posted: 02/05/2008 01:24:01

People in the Bideford area have recycled 2,786 tonnes of household waste thanks to the 1.2 million centre which opened in Bideford a year ago.

The state-of-the-art site at Caddsdown Industrial Estate serves Bideford, Northam, Westward Ho! and the surrounding area. It is estimated that the site had over 85,000 visits from local residents over the past 12 months. Around 65% of the 4,286 of all waste brought to the site is recycled.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "This new recycling centre has already proven its worth with such an impressive amount of waste being recycled in its first year. It is popular with homeowners in the Bideford area, and they seem to be finding it easy to use. The centre is helping increase Devon's recycling rate and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill which supports our efforts to make Devon greener by cutting carbon dioxide emissions. I congratulate the people of the Bideford area and look forward to them raising their achievement to even higher levels of success in the future."

Councillor Humphrey Temperley, Devon County Councillor for Bideford South Hartland, said: "This centre is just what people were asking for to help them recycle more and reduce their household waste, and its instant popularity is testament to that. Because it has cut down on the need to travel to sites in Barnstaple or Torrington, it's also saving several hundred thousand vehicle miles a year which is another plus for Devon's environment."

Councillor Hugo Barton, Devon County Councillor for Bideford East, said: "The facilities at this recycling centre are first class and such a positive response from the public shows that people are supporting us in doing it for Devon. There's no doubt this site has encouraged people to recycle more and by providing so many benefits it is serving as a great investment."

Clean mixed plastic packaging, plastic bottles, carrier bags, glass, paper, cardboard, cans, textiles, metal, wood and timber, garden waste, soil and rubble can all be recycled at the site. There are also facilities to recycle engine oil, cooking oil, car batteries, domestic batteries, tyres, gas canisters, household electrical appliances, televisions and computer monitors, fridges/freezers, fluorescent tubes, spectacles and ink cartridges.

The centre can also handle non-recyclable waste and small quantities of hazardous household waste such as garden chemicals and asbestos sheeting. There is also a dedicated 'sales' area for some salvaged items.

The site is open seven days a week, all year round (except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day). It is open Monday-Friday 8am to 6pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm. (The closing times are 4.30pm during the winter months of October to March).
