Art workshops put Redditch in the picture
Posted: 03/05/2008 18:30:40
A series of workshops for youngsters organised by a Redditch Community Support Officer as part of a national art competition has drawn praise from the Home Secretary.
Jacqui Smith attended the final workshop held at Woodrow Library and was impressed with the entries. Community Support Officer Gemma Bosco-Woods said that the Home Secretary was also interested in the young artists’ perceptions of Redditch as reflected in the competition theme, My Town.
“She was also impressed that we were using the library and getting the kids involved that way,” Gemma added.
Four workshops were organised at the library in March and April as part of a competition for 10 to 18-year-olds launched by internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe. The 15 winners in three age categories will each receive prizes of £250.
Gemma said that there had been an average attendance of around 20 at each workshop and she had been very pleased by the response.
“The competition really captured the imagination and although quite a few of those who turned up were too young to actually enter they still worked on pictures and were really keen to get in on it.
“The standard of the entries was very, very good and if we can get a winner from Redditch it will be amazing, especially as Mackenzie is keen to come to the town to run an art workshop and I really want to hold him to that.”
She said she had taken photographs of the entries and was hoping that at least some of them would be displayed on Mackenzie Thorpe’s website.
