Police Thank Shrewsbury People For Their Support
Posted: 07/05/2008 17:33:56
Shrewsbury police today thanked hundreds of local people who attended the charity football match in memory of PC Ricky Gray.
The match was organised by police colleagues of PC Gray to mark the first anniversary of his death. Shrewsbury Town FC offered to stage it at its new stadium and a crowd of around 700 saw Gray’s United beat Rickster’s Rovers 2-1 on Friday night.
The guest of honour was PC Gray’s wife Jenny and proceeds from the evening – including an auction and a raffle – totalled around £6,500 for her two chosen charities – the RNLI and the Royal Star & Garter Homes for disabled ex-servicemen and women. Falklands War hero Simon Weston, a vice president of the Star & Garter, was among the spectators.
One of the organisers, Detective Sergeant Jonathan Matthews said today it had been a special occasion. “We were delighted with the turnout. It was a smashing gesture from people in and around Shrewsbury to turn out in such large numbers to pay their respects.
“It made it a truly community event and helped us raise more than £6,000 for Jenny’s two charities.”
The crowd enjoyed a hard-fought match between two sides made up of PC Gray’s police colleagues. He was a keen footballer and was a regular at the Sunday night five-a-side sessions held at the Monkmoor recreational ground as well as playing in the Over 35s versus Under 35s fixture.
One of the highlights of the evening was a fly-past by West Mercia’s police helicopter as it returned from a job. As the final whistle went to end the match, it hovered over the centre spot before dipping its nose in salute.
As the players and crowd applauded, six pipers and four drummers from PC Gray’s old Army regiment, the Black Watch, marched along the touchline led by their mace bearer in front of the main stand.
It was a fitting finale to a memorable evening.
