Operation Cofton targets burglaries

Posted: 05/06/2008 18:40:09

Police in North Worcestershire have launched an operation aimed at tackling domestic burglaries in Cofton Hackett.

There have been nine burglaries or attempted burglaries reported in the village between January and May.

There are no particular patterns in terms of locations, times, and methods of entry, although several have been in the day and the Barnt Green Road and Ashmead Rise and Ashmead Drive areas have been particularly targeted.

Most of the burglaries happened while the houses were unoccupied, although one was a sneak-in burglary through the insecure front door while the owners were at home.

The items stolen have included jewellery, television sets, laptops and vehicles.

Sergeant Mark Wilkes of Bromsgrove Police said: “The spate of recent burglaries, together with an armed robbery at Cofton Hackett Post Office on 9th May, have raised the fear of crime.

“As a result, an operation called Operation Cofton has been launched under which high visibility patrols by uniformed officers are being stepped up to act as a deterrent and reassure the community.

“We are liasing closely with Neighbourhood Watch, delivering leaflets to homes which are considered vulnerable, giving out crime prevention advice, and promoting the use of SmartWater, a property marking system using forensically coded water.

“Given Cofton Hackett’s proximity to South Birmingham, we are also exchanging information with our colleagues from West Midlands Police and using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology to target vehicles used by known offenders.”

Witnesses or anyone with information on burglaries in Cofton Hackett is asked to contact Bromsgrove Police on 08457 444888 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
