Expand your muscles and your mind at Bromyard
Posted: 12/06/2008 17:17:33
Visitors to the halo gym at the Bromyard Centre are being encouraged to expand their mind while they expand their muscles.
An innovative scheme running throughout June gives gym users the opportunity to borrow a tiny iPod-style unit and listen to books while they pump iron.
The project is an initiative between the council’s libraries service, halo and Info in Herefordshire, which all come under one roof at the Bromyard Centre.
“This is a new project and gym users can book out one of the Clipper Playaway talking books for free throughout June to give it a try,” said Kate Murray, the council’s assistant cultural services manager for libraries and heritage.
“While we’re going to roll the scheme out across all our libraries during October, as part of National Year of Reading, we hope this initial trial will encourage halo gym users to try the new library service and sign up as new library members,” added Kate.
Although the scheme has only just started, there is a range of books which can be borrowed and listened to while working out in the gym.
These included titles such as Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, Hope by Lesley Pearce and Engleby by Sebastian Faulkes.
“I think it’s an excellent idea,” said Val Marling, from Bromyard, who attends the halo gym regularly as part of the Lift programme following an operation to have a new heart valve fitted at the end of last year.
“I think it will help take your mind of the amount of hard work you’re doing in the gym – but they’ll have to make sure they have the right kind of books for different age groups – I like biographies and Indian romances,” added Val.
