Bewdley Youth PACT

Posted: 24/06/2008 23:17:09

A Youth PACT (Partners and Communities Together) is being set up in Bewdley as part of a campaign to reduce anti social behaviour in the town.

A meeting held recently with various agencies including Bewdley Town Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and Neighbourhood Watch endorsed Bewdley Police’s aim to promote a Youth PACT to give young people a chance to say what issues they feel are important.

Bewdley Police and its partner organisations are initially working with students from Bewdley School on the project, but plan to open it out to other young people.

PC Pauline Montague said: “All 600-plus pupils at the secondary school will be given a PACT survey form to fill in, so they can give us their views on how things can be improved for them locally which will hopefully reduce anti social behaviour.

“A PACT postbox has been installed at the school and others are in place around the town at locations including Bewdley Medical Centre, HSBC bank, the Guild Hall, the library, Arley Post Office and Far Forest Stores, while Clows Top Post Office has PACT postcards although not a postbox. The postboxes will be emptied once a week, and the responses will help tell us what issues matter most to people, both young and old.

“Although as far as YouthPACT goes, while we are concentrating initially on the secondary school, we hope to extend it to the middle schools in the future.

“We will also be conducting surveys with young people at local parks, but if anyone is particularly keen to be take part we would urge them not to wait for us to contact them but to get in touch.

“We believe that getting young people involved is the key to tackling anti social behaviour.

"YouthPACT gives young people a voice in the community and we hope it demonstrates we are listening to young people.”

Pc Montague added: “We must stress that anti social behaviour is not a big problem in the Bewdley area, but the perception of it is greater than the reality.

“We know residents can find groups of young people intimidating but most of they time they are just having a chat, not causing any trouble, and we urge tolerance.

“We are working closely with Bewdley Town Council, in particular town mayor Barbara Stallwood, to address the issue of anti social behaviour within the town, and are also working with Wyre Forest District Council to organise more summer activities for children and young people.”

At the meeting Neighbourhood Watch raised the issue of overflowing bins being a problem in Bewdley parks, contributing to a neglected look which could encourage anti social behaviour. As a result it has been agreed with the district council that litter collections will be increased.
