Rogue trader warning
Posted: 04/07/2008 20:24:45
Police are warning elderly residents in the Oxford area to be on the look out for potential fraudsters after two pensioners were targeted this week.
An elderly man was approached in the street in Cutteslowe at midday on Monday (30/6) by a man who demanded money for building work that he claimed to have done on the man’s house. The man stated that he was from the council and that had done work on the roof; he then demanded to be paid for his services. The elderly man told him that he didn’t keep large amounts of money in the house and the man left.
A similar incident occurred the following day (Tuesday, 1 July) when a 92-year-old woman was approached in the street in Blenheim Drive at 3pm by a man also asking to be paid for work that he claimed to have done on her house. The woman also refused to pay and he left.
Det Con Louise Tompkins said: “We are unsure if these incidents are connected, but we want to remind elderly people to be on their guard for bogus callers.
“Always check the identification of any tradesman or unknown caller at your home and if they do not have an appointment, do not let them into your house.
“If you are unsure about a trader, ask them to return later when a friend or member of the family can be there. If you believe someone is a rogue trader or bogus caller please call 999 and alert us immediately.”
If you wish to get further advice, please contact our crime reduction advisers via the police enquiry centre on 0854 8 505 505. If you have any information about bogus callers or rogue traders operating in the Oxford area, contact the police on the same number or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
