High Risk Tree To Be Felled By Council
Posted: 04/08/2008 23:19:20
A large walnut tree growing in Cirencester's Abbey Grounds will be felled this month by Cotswold District Council contractors because it poses a risk to public safety.
The distinctive tree, which is roughly 150 years old, has been identified as high risk because it is infected by a fungus that causes dangerous wood decay.
Council Tree Officer Matt Reid said: "This isn't a decision that's been taken lightly. When a decay fungus like this is found, especially on a large tree near a busy footpath, we have to take action to ensure passers-by are not put at risk.
"Because the tree is decayed, it does not have any significant timber value, but the majority of the wood is going to be converted to chip that will be recycled into electricity."
The decision to fell has been endorsed by an independent tree expert.
The tree is going to be dismantled by skilled arborists as soon as it has been confirmed that no bats are using any cavities in the trunk as a roost.
The problem tree was identified as part of the District Council’s tree risk management strategy which requires all Council-owned trees to be inspected by qualified staff at regular intervals.
Matt added: "The Roman archaeology beneath the Abbey Grounds means that we are not allowed to plant a replacement. However, we will be leaving a stump for habitat and encouraging the existing shrubs there to grow on."
