Street art project draws Redditch youngsters
Posted: 14/08/2008 00:18:48
Street art sessions are helping to keep youngsters entertained in Woodrow, Redditch, during the summer break thanks to a project launched by the organisation What’s Your Point and sponsored by the area’s Local Policing Team.
Community artist Richard Inwood hosted the first session on Wednesday, August 6, at Rushock Close, Woodrow South, when around 30 children and teenagers turned up to take part. Members of the Local Policing Team were on hand to help out while District Commander for Redditch, Chief Inspector Angela Burnet, also dropped in to see the youngsters at work on a variety of designs.
Redditch Borough Council’s tenancy officer for Woodrow, Lindon Morgan, and the council’s anti-social behaviour co-ordindator for the area, Mohammed Shazad, also helped out during the event.
It was the latest in a series of art based initiatives by What’s Your Point, a non-profit making organisation which works with local young people. Other projects it has recently carried out include painting of the shutters at Woodrow Library and two underpasses in Redditch.
Local Policing Officer for Woodrow, Pc Nigel Bennett, said: “This is as great new way of occupying youngsters during the summer holidays and Richard, the artist involved, interacts extremely well with the kids. It’s an area where we have had complaints about anti-social behaviour so finding positive activities like this for young people can only be beneficial.
“We’re looking to develop this even further and currently planning another art project involving What’s Your Point and the Alexandra Hospital (Redditch).”
What’s Your Point director Maureen Hayden added: “This has been a great success. For us it’s about partnership working and trying to reach as many young people as possible in the Woodrow community. Art is a great leveller and the type of art we are involved in appeals to youngsters of all ages and abilities.”
A further street art session will be held tomorrow Wednesday (August 13) at Cropthorne Close, Woodrow North, from noon onwards.
