Council helps fund Village Hall improvements

Posted: 14/10/2008 23:32:01

Villagers in Milton-under-Wychwood will see improvements to their Village Hall following completion of a renovation project costing over £55,000.

The facilities at the Hall, built in 1963, needed to be updated so that they could be used by everyone in the village including people with disabilities and parents with young children.

Now there are new toilet facilities and a dedicated disabled toilet and baby changing unit. The entrance is much bigger and there is a ramp so that wheelchair users and parents with prams and buggies can come in easily.

The Village Hall Committee raised nearly £18,000 through hall hire income and fundraising. One of the committee members even ran the London Marathon in aid of the appeal. They also obtained funds from the Parish Council, West Oxfordshire District Council and the Doris Field Trust.

Mr Ivor Mollart is Treasurer of the Village Hall committee and delighted with the improvements. He said, “The Village Hall is an essential part of the community – it is a coming together place where people can meet up. “We have worked hard to bring the Village Hall up to such a high standard – it is something we are very proud of and I am sure our residents will feel the same when they see it. Every village should have a hall like ours.”

Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health said, “Village Halls are an essential part of village life and we are pleased to have supported this project. We congratulate the Village Hall committee on their marvellous fundraising efforts - it is a real testament to the community spirit in Milton under Wychwood.”

The many groups using the Hall include the Playgroup, History Society, Allotments Association, Mothers’ Union, Women’s Institute, Rainbows, Brownies and local companies. A wide range of events and activities also take place in the Hall such as Ballroom Dancing, Parish Council Meetings, parties, plays and pantomimes.
