Easier access to Council services at the Guildhall
Posted: 19/07/2006 23:57:38
Councillors recently visited the Guildhall at Chipping Norton to see how better use is being made of the building, including full disabled access, following extensive refurbishment work.
A wider range of council services is now available as well as being a single point for enquiries. Council tax and other payments can be made by cheque or by using a credit/debit card and the full range of council leaflets and forms are stocked. Tourism literature is on display and there is a telephone line for visitors to book accommodation.
The Guildhall, a listed building, was built around 1500 by the Guild of the Holy Trinity, which administered the market. The original building had an open arched ground floor with the Guild Chamber at first floor level. During refurbishment work many historic features were uncovered and preserved including an important historic vaulted roof space which had previously been concealed above a suspended ceiling.
Cllr Keith Stone, Chairman of West Oxfordshire District Council welcomed everyone saying, “The refurbishments provide a much pleasanter environment for all those using the Guildhall. It also enables us to provide a fuller service to everyone. It is good news too that this wonderful old building has been fully restored to its former glory.”
The Guildhall has served as an area office for West Oxfordshire District Council since 1974 and prior to that Chipping Norton Borough Council.
