Police help Shrewsbury toy library scheme
Posted: 23/12/2008 23:30:02
A small charity fund run by West Mercia Police has stepped in with a cash donation to provide a Christmas boost to organisers of a toy library in Harlescott Grange, Shrewsbury.
The toy library, which is based in the Kynaston Road Community Centre, was nominated for a donation after the West Mercia Police Community Fund trustees decided to make contributions to a small number of community projects across its area.
Community Support Officer Sue Tomlinson from Shropshire’s Youth Inclusion police team, in making the nomination, said the money would make a real difference.
She said it would enable those running the venture to obtain more play equipment which would be available to parents of young children for hire at 50p per week.
“This facility is in the heart of a residential area and the donation will make a big difference to the organisation, the parents and the children. It will also be used to arrange local outings for the young families, such as a farm visit.
“The toy library is a great community facility which relies on donations. It provides a focal point for parents and youngsters meeting up. This money would have a great result at any time of the year, but will be great before Christmas,” added CSO Tomlinson.
The Police Community Fund supports victims of crime and community projects with small contributions where they can make a real difference in cases where money is urgently needed.
It is made up of money raised from the sale of unclaimed property, from voluntary contributions made by officers and staff and from donations given to the police.
A spokesperson for the Fund, said: “We were able make donations to about 15 charitable or community groups across the Force area and felt the toy library was a worthy cause where the money will be put to good use within the local community in the Harlescott Grange area.”
