Bus shelter gets a new look

Posted: 02/01/2009 21:34:00

A previously vandalised bus shelter in a North Worcestershire village has been given a new look, thanks to young people from the area.

The bus shelter in Red Lion Street, Alvechurch, was a hot spot for graffiti.

However a mural created by young people has now been put on the back wall, after being created by local youngsters as part of a project run by West Mercia Constabulary.

Community Support Officer Pippa Church has spent the last few months working with around 70 young people aged eight to 16 from various youth groups.

The theme of the 8ft high by 16ft long mural is Alvechurch and the history of the village. It depicts various well known scenes from around the area including St Laurence Church, the Crown Inn, the oldest houses in the village in Bear Hill, The Square in the village centre, the new Multi Use Games Area, the marina, a Canadian Wellington bomber which crashed in Rowney Green in the Second World War, and a locally made Dellow car,

Worcestershire Youth Support provided the help of artist and youth worker Robert Turner and also provided the paints, St Laurence’s Church allowed the young people to use the parish council meeting rooms, and the parish council supplied the wood.

The project has helped build a better relationship between the police and the young people in the area, and has helped reduce anti social behaviour. Police also hope the mural will discourage further graffiti at the bus shelter.

CSO Church said: “The bus shelter previously looked a real eyesore but the mural is really colourful and there has been a really positive response from local residents.”
