Council puts safety first making bridge one-way
Posted: 06/02/2009 13:20:37
Herefordshire Council has decided, in the interests of safety, that the replacement Colwall Bridge will be one-way and controlled by traffic lights.
The decision follows detailed consideration of safety audits which have looked at the operation of both one-way and two-way traffic options over the new bridge, due to be completed by June this year.
Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “As a council, we must put the safety of road users first and the single-way option will not only prevent accidents on the bridge but will also have the added benefit of lowering traffic speeds through the village.
“We have looked at the two-way option but, if this were adopted, the width of the carriageway would have to be reduced and the safety audit identifies that there would be a significant risk of vehicles clipping each other or the kerb or even pedestrians while travelling over the bridge.
“If there were to be an accident on the bridge, the council could face claims from anyone who suffered injuries, so we must act responsibly and discount the two-way option.
“Coca Cola, which has large lorries going over the bridge on a daily basis, told us they would prefer the one-way option because it would prevent their vehicles from hitting the kerb and this comment suggests their drivers have obviously encountered such problems in the past.
“Governors from Colwall Primary School also supported the one-way option as did the Ledbury Area Cycle Forum.
“The safety audit found that the traffic signals on the new bridge will need careful timing to take account of the movements of both cyclists and horse riders and ensure they are not involved in any accidents and we will make sure this is carried out,” he added.
The detailed highway design will now be fully developed to meet with the Network Rail programme for the bridge.
