Ten hut! Get active at fitness boot camp day

Posted: 25/03/2009 12:49:13

A fun day with military-themed fitness ‘boot camps’ will take place at Carterton Leisure Centre on Wednesday 25th March.

Various activities will run from 10am until 6.30pm, led by West Oxfordshire’s GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active) team in conjunction with fitness instructors from nearby RAF Brize Norton.

GO Active, a project involving West Oxfordshire District Council and its leisure provider Nexus Community, is holding the day as part of its aim to get more adults over the age of 16 to lead more active, healthier lifestyles, and show people that exercising can be a great way of having fun and meeting new people.

The ‘boot camp’ theme relates to Carterton’s close link to RAF Brize Norton and coincides with national Yellow Ribbon Week, which is run by the Carterton-based Yellow Ribbon Foundation, set up to support people servicing in the Armed Forces and their families.

Activities include:
* 10am: ‘Prime Time Parade’ – a free walk around Carterton open to everyone, followed by refreshments. Among those taking part will be ex-service men and women from the area.
* 1-2pm: ‘GI Jane Boot Camp’ – fun military-style exercise circuit for women aimed at toning up and getting in shape.
* 2-3.30pm: Swimming for seniors, with a swimming instructor on hand to give advice and answer questions.
* 4-4.45pm: Outdoor ‘Teen Boot Camp’ for 12 to -16-year-olds
* 5.30-6.30pm: Outdoor ‘Boot Camp Circuit’ open to all adults

The ‘Boot Camp’ classes will cost £1 per person. All proceeds will go to the Yellow Ribbon Foundation.

GO Active is running countywide and has been set up to steer people towards existing activities such as swimming, exercise classes and gyms, and provide extra activities, such as the ‘Boot Camp’ day, tailored to meet local needs and interests. In West Oxfordshire, a GO Active co-ordinator is based at the District Council and there are four ‘activators’ based at leisure centres in Carterton, Chipping Norton, Eynsham and the Windrush, Witney.
