Young people in Bromyard challenge the media
Posted: 21/05/2009 18:42:26
Herefordshire Council’s youth workers have been working with international artists and Queen Elizabeth Humanities College on an art project for the Hereford Photography Festival (14th May-21st June).
The project called ‘Labelled’ has involved the young people creating their own slogans which challenge media paranoia and perceptions on issues like self image and aspirations. The slogans which include ‘bullying can hurt’ and ‘we have a right’ have been turned into t-shirts, labels, banners and photographs that will all be on display in Bromyard town centre from May 28th – June 20th.
In addition a special event has been organised on Friday May 29th at the Heritage Centre, Bromyard between 6-9pm aimed at the whole community. The event will consist of a film and photography artwork. Music will be provided by local youngsters and Lofty (Mark Loughman) who is from the international touring band Dubmerge and has been working with young people through the council’s youth service.
One of the artists, Carl Beebee said, “The work will be clearly visible. There will be huge banners around the town as well as posters in many venues and shop windows. I think often young people are unfairly treated by the press and this project was their opportunity to create something positive.”
Pippa Hart, Herefordshire Council, said: “The young people have been meeting regularly for several months at the youth centre, participating in workshops funded by Bromyard Act and Awards for All*. The good thing about a project like this is that it allows young people to explore their creativity on one level and discuss some quite tricky issues around the power of the media on another.”
